Denmark – December 2014 & Full Year

December 2014 was another all-time-high for EV registrations, with 334 units, pushing the December EV Share to 1,8% of the Danish light vehicle market. EV adoption was supported by new, attractive models and a rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure. The full year 2014 finished at 1642 units, over three times more than 2013. In 2012, Denmark had participated in the Better Place endeavor of battery swapping stations. Nearly 200 Renault Fluence, the car that offered the possibility of quick battery change, were sold. Total EV sales were 590 units in 2012. With Better Place out of business, 2013 EV volumes fell back to just 520 units, despite generous tax incentives.

Annual results

Vehicle taxation in Denmark clearly favors pure EVs and not plug-in hybrids. Only 21 PHEVs were sold in 2014. Buyers of EVs (below 2 tons curb weight) are exempted from the registration tax which is over 100% of the vehicles taxable value. The taxation scheme for vehicles with combustion engines is easier on cheap and frugal cars and commercial vehicles. It punishes buyers of expensive and thirsty cars. Not unlike in Norway, this makes EV interesting in larger and luxury vehicle categories in Denmark. Policy makers in Denmark are not very pleased with this buying pattern and are said to reconsider the registration tax exemption regime in its parts or altogether, with revisions to be valid after 2015.
